I think the
hardest part for us as parents was the lack of information that was given to us when we
were told our son could not hear. There are so many things to consider about children with
hearing impairments. Things you don't even think about. The main issue being, how do you
communicate? There are many ways of communicating with a child with a hearing impairment.
Sign, Cued Speech, Speech Reading, or teaching your child to listen and talk. No one told
us about all these options. I will list some places here were you can find information on
these methods. The only advice I can give a parent who is trying to make the decision
about communication mode, is to go with what you feel is right for your family and your
child. You will hear many ways that are "right" for your child. But none of them
are "right" if you don't believe it, and work hard at it.
Listen Up! and Talk it Up!

This is my favorite site for information. Everything you ever
wanted to know about hearing loss, and kids is here.
Below are some sites I have found very useful and full of information to get you
started.

list, I have moved all the schools to my Regional Page

A few Extra's:
- DeafKids.com is
the newest feature at the Website, www.DEAF.com.
It contains a monitored chatroom just for deaf and HH kids, age 17 and
below. Itıs free and open 24 hours a day. Deaf/HH kids from the U.S. and
abroad are invited to stop by. To ensure the
safety of all visitors, the DeafKids.com chatroom uses a log system. Records
are kept of all visitors. Thereıs also a filter system to protect kids
against unacceptable language (such as profanity, sexual slang, vulgar
insults, and racial/ethnic slurs.) If any visitor types in an unacceptable
word, itıs automatically changed to a designated substitute word before it
appears online.
- San Antonio's chapter of Self Help for Hard of Hearing People has
assembled a hospital kit to make stays easier, and to help educate hospital staff.
Included is: a placard for placement in the room that spells out your specific needs;
hearing loss stickers for charts; a Face Me button; and tips on communication and hearing
loss for hospital staff. For more information contact Barbara Hunter
