I think the hardest part for us as parents was the lack of information that was given to us when we were told our son could not hear. There are so many things to consider about children with hearing impairments. Things you don't even think about. The main issue being, how do you communicate? There are many ways of communicating with a child with a hearing impairment. Sign, Cued Speech, Speech Reading, or teaching your child to listen and talk. No one told us about all these options. I will list some places here were you can find information on these methods. The only advice I can give a parent who is trying to make the decision about communication mode, is to go with what you feel is right for your family and your child. You will hear many ways that are "right" for your child. But none of them are "right" if you don't believe it, and work hard at it.

Schools for the Deaf on the Web  This is not a complete list, I have moved all the schools to my Regional Page and put them in their respective states/provinces.

A few Extra's:

  • DeafKids.com is the newest feature at the Website, www.DEAF.com. It contains a monitored chatroom just for deaf and HH kids, age 17 and below. Itıs free and open 24 hours a day. Deaf/HH kids from the U.S. and abroad are invited to stop by. To ensure the safety of all visitors, the DeafKids.com chatroom uses a log system. Records are kept of all visitors. Thereıs also a filter system to protect kids against unacceptable language (such as profanity, sexual slang, vulgar insults, and racial/ethnic slurs.) If any visitor types in an unacceptable word, itıs automatically changed to a designated substitute word before it appears online.
  • San Antonio's chapter of Self Help for Hard of Hearing People has assembled a hospital kit to make stays easier, and to help educate hospital staff.   Included is: a placard for placement in the room that spells out your specific needs; hearing loss stickers for charts; a Face Me button; and tips on communication and hearing loss for hospital staff.  For more information contact Barbara Hunter
    210-673-2478 V/TTY or BOBATEX@aol.com
  • Internet Resources on Hearing Loss   This site contains many links to information on hearing loss, vestibular problems, assistive devices, hearing aids, brochures, and research.
  • Untangling the Web, Disability Resources
  • Society for Neuroscience: Brain Briefings
  • Scottish Sensory Centre  Great site.
  • Children of the Silent World
  • Otoscopes   You'll want one of these.  Gotta look for that old ear wax before making new ear molds.

Education I have created a whole page dedicated to education, IEP's, and whatever else I can find on the subject of teaching our kids.
