Additions to the IEP (1996/1997) for Child
AREA: SPEECH AND LANGUAGE
SUB-AREA: PRAGMATICS
ANNUAL GOAL:
Child will use appropriate problem solving skills.
SHORT -TERM OBJECTIVES:
Child will demonstrate appropriate problem recognition skills by commenting if a problem
is foreseeable (Don't do that, that will make me angry. Careful, the water will spill on
the floor).
Child will demonstrate problem solving strategies by offering solutions (Please let us
share this toy. It is your turn now, but in 5 min. I would like to have a turn. Would you
like to trade? Please leave me alone. Please go away.)
Child will be able to use commenting behavior and will be able to provide a reason for
her feeling (I am angry because it was my turn. I am sad because I would like to finish my
picture before cleaning up).
Child will be able to request help and monitor her needs (Please speak louder I cannot
hear you. Please say it again. Sorry, what did you say? I need a new battery. I don't know
who is talking now, please show me)

ANNUAL GOAL:
Child will comprehend causality leading to a conflict.
SHORT -TERM OBJECTIVES:
Child will identify the reason leading to a problem if provided with pictures showing a
particular scene and 5 possible and impossible reasons with a 90% accuracy.
Child will comprehend vocabulary used for conflict resolution (choice, to choose,
decision, compare, problem, conflict, fit, argument, to argue, temper tantrum, to act up,
easy does it, switch positions, take turns, change roles, solution, to solve).
AREA: SOCIAL STUDIES
SUB-AREA: GRADE 1
ANNUAL GOAL:
Child will understand that individuals are different, have
different needs and have to be respected.
SHORT-TERM OBJECTIVES:
Child will be able to describe why people are different (different races, skin color,
ethnic background, rituals, people with disabilities).
Child will know about and will be able to show appropriate behavior to respect people
with different needs (how to help a blind person on a street, a pregnant woman in a full
bus, a child too small to reach an elevator button, a person who is hurt).
Child will be able to describe what people have in common (need to eat, drink, sleep,
grow, change, reproduce, follow rules of living in a society).
Child will be able to understand what distinguishes a human society from a group of
animals (language to communicate, rules for living in a society, self-control can change
behavior).
