Speech/Language Goals

Here is the Speech Language Goal part of Child's IEP. They are excellent. I have others for last year, if you all are interested. Hers are always right on target. Please note that 1.is probably not relevant to you as they are related to Child's severe stuttering issues. I will send each type of goal separately. - (Mom)

  1. Will improve fluency of speech production
     Will utilize learned strategies to reduce/eliminate prolongation's and repetitions
     Will eliminate non-communicative "starter" and "filer" sounds
     Will acquire strategies for organizing oral expressive language
  2. Will improve intelligibility of oral communication

  3.  a. Will complete carry-over of /k, g, and l/ phonemes
     

    b. Will refine and produce /sh, ch, and j/ in conversation

  1. Will demonstrate comprehension and consistent use of age appropriate grammar and syntax.
     a. Will identify pictures from oral language utilizing more complex structures as well as conditional and imbedded clauses with subtle differences in descriptors (i.e., verb tense, plurality, prepositions, adjectives and adverbs)
     b. Will follow oral directions demonstrating understanding of 3a.
     c. Will utilize correct pronouns, irregular verbs and plurals
  2. Will continue to expand vocabulary and concept development
     a. Will demonstrate understanding of curriculum-related vocabulary
     b. Will classify and categorize in hierarchical constructs
  3. Will continue to develop comprehension and use of questioning skills
     a. Will respond to more abstract questions
     b. Will respond more accurately to questions regarding remote events

Goals Involving Itinerant Teacher


(Following are Child's IEP goals for the Itinerant Teacher for the H.
Please excuse mistyping. - Mom)

GOAL 1:
Child will have access to communication, in school, through appropriate
modifications and accommodations.

GOAL 2:
Child will have access to classroom vocabulary and presentation of
concepts.

OBJECTIVES:
Child will access the following accommodations/modifications:


        -FM system with conference microphone
        -preferential seating
        -captioned videotapes
        -use of visual aids in the classroom, including use of overhead
         projector, sentence strip holders, flip charts, written instructions,
         and written outlines, to accompany the lessons
        -carpeted classroom, or tennis balls on chair legs to reduce the noise
   ****-acoustic modification**** (They have refused this)

EVALUATION PROCEDURE:
-Procurement of equipment
-staff development, to demonstrate to the team working with Child, how to access captioned films for the classroom and special activities, how to identify captioned films, how to work the equipment to display the captions
-establish and maintain an account for captioned video rentals
-staff development, with the team and with individual teachers, to explain the types of accommodations/modifications necessary to promote
communication in the classroom.  This will include information about the affect of Child's hearing loss and use of FM system on his communication.

Intervention will also include specific accommodations/ modifications by the teacher, such as use of visual aids; standing away from window glare; proper lighting (to prevent shadows on face); repetition of classmates responses during classroom discussions, reducing sound by placement of posters and materials on walls in the classroom.

Staff development and intervention will be presented by the itinerant teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program.  Itinerant teacher will also observe and review Child's achievement, communication and responses to the classroom setting in conjunction with team members.


WE WANT DIRECT SERVICES  INCLUDED HERE

GOAL 2:
-Child will learn to monitor the functioning of his FM system or hearing
aid.
-Child will learn to identify a malfunctioning system, and notify school
personnel or his parents of the malfunctioning system.
-Child will learn how to complete a daily checklist, to ensure the hearing
aid/FM is functioning properly.


EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
Itinerant teacher services and designated school contact person.

GOAL 3:
Child will have access to presentations in large group settings and special events.

OBJECTIVES:
**We want this part extended to extracurricular activities*******
-Child will have preferential seating for special presentations and large group activities.
-FM transmitter will be set-up
-Child will have a teacher or non-full-time assistant to provide additional oral/visual information.


EVALUATION PROCEDURE:
A contact person within [the child's] Elementary School will ensure proper set-up and train presenters on how to use ALD before a presentation. 
This may include contacting the presenter for preview material and/or information, as well as explanation of the presenter's role in the use of
the FM system.


GOAL 4:
Child will seek assistance when he has not received the entire message in the classroom.

OBJECTIVE:
-
Child will learn strategies for asking for clarification, explanation, or need for an example to be presented when he does not understand a direction
or activity.

EVALUATION PROCEDURE:
Itinerant teacher and classroom teacher will develop strategies for Child to use, and implement these  strategies

GOAL 5:
Child will learn incidental signs that will promote following directions and enhance communication.
**We want concurrent sign use and/or specific sign instruction***


OBJECTIVE:
Use of basic signs that can be used in school activities.

EVALUATION:

GOAL 6:
Child will be socially integrated into the classroom.

OBJECTIVE:
Through awareness activities, students will learn about hearing loss in general, assistive technology used by hard of hearing students, communication styles, and ways they can promote communication.

EVALUATION PROCEDURE:
-A classroom unit provided by the itinerant teacher.
-Addition of materials in the classroom that will promote understanding of
hearing loss and communication strategies.

SUGGESTED STRATEGY RECOMMENDATIONS:
(Attach to itinerant IEP goals)

Provide a staff development workshop for the team working with Child.
Workshop will include information on:
-Access to captioned films for classroom activities, including identification of captioned films, hands-on equipment use, rental of closed-captioned films.

-Establish and maintain an account for captioned video rentals
-Staff development with team explaining the types of

In addition to staff development presented by the itinerant teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program, the itinerant teacher will also observe and review Child's achievement, communication, and responses to the class-room setting.   In conjunction with team members, additional recommendations will be provided if necessary.

Audiology Goals

Following is Child's audiology IEP:

  • Child will participate in hearing and auditory trainer monitoring by the audiologist

Evaluation Procedures:

  • Clinic visits as required
  • we wanted included adaptations to auditory trainer
  • Evaluation of impact of noise
  • Auditory processing evaluation
  • Assistance with assessing new technologies to allow child to hear
  • Assistance with acoustical modification
  • Consultative services to school re:  allowing child to hear at assemblies, special events

Note - The next two excerpts are from the IEP for the same child as all previous on this page. The goals listed below were part of his IEP for the 1994/95 school year. - Craig

Goals for the Classroom Teacher - 1994/95


Language:  Child will improve his communication skills:

        -Increase his vocabulary (naming animals, community workers, common
         vehicles, etc.)
        -Follow directions of increasing length and complexity
        -Categorize objects
        -Explain function of an object
        -Relate experiences in sequence
        -Answer wh questions (where, why and when)
        -Increase his attention span
        -Improve ability to carry on conversations with classmates and
         teacher involving at least 4 turns.

**WE WANTED THE ABOVE MORE SPECIFICALLY DEFINED.  FOR EX., WHAT LENGTH AND COMPLEXITY, WHAT OBJECTS,
INCREASE ATTENTION FROM WHAT TO WHAT.

Social: Child will continue to develop more independent work habits and age
        appropriate social skills.

        -Consistently share toys and materials and take turns using them
         with minimal teacher intervention.

        -Improve his attention span to complete simple tasks and to follow
         directions with increasing independence

CHILD'S IEP 1994-5 SPEECH

Will further expand communication skills:

 A- Will expand vocabulary and language concepts
- Will describe and define; will categorize by features
 B-  Will demonstrate more age appropriate syntax and morphology
 C-  Will improve articulation skills-acquiring those that are developmentally appropriate (k,g,f,y,ing,l,j,s & z, sh & ch/ (Reduce fronting substitutions)
 D-  Will more consistently attend to the face and mouth of the speakers to develop speech reading and sound production skills
 E-  Will continue to expand sentence length and sequential expression of experiences.
 F-  Will expand ability to respond appropriately to wh questions and will utilize appropriate question constructs to obtain information.
