This child has a cochlear implant. Some of the modifications are
directly related to the implant, but many will also apply to children who wear hearing
aids.

Speech and Language Sub-areas:
IEP 1996/97 Mainstream into first grade public school
Classification: deaf
Program: special education class, partial mainstream for math,
science,
art, music, computer, gym, library, recess. The aim of all teachers will be
to fully mainstream Child by December 1996.
Extended school year (12 month program).
Transportation provided by district.
Staffing ratio: special Ed class: 12:1:1. Full time aide, assigned
for
Child for the full day.
Assistive listening devices: free sound field system by Telex
(teacher wears a microphone, 2-3 loudspeakers are in the classroom and
in the assembly hall - gym).
Room accommodations: carpet squares under chairs, replace old
fluorescent light bulbs. Static guards on computers, closed captioned TV.
Check room with sound meter to eliminate machines that give off a lot of
noise. Close windows and doors during lessons.
In service: Held by teacher of the deaf, one session before school
starts,
2x 30 min./week while child is partially mainstreamed, 4x30 min./week
when Child is fully mainstreamed. Team meetings with teachers, aide,
speech pathologist, district and parents once a month.
Speech and Language therapy: ratio 1:1, 3 times a week (30 min.
session);ratio 1:5, twice a week (group session).
School-parent interaction:
Extra set of school books and math kit will be provided for the
home. Daily
exchange between teachers and parents via journal writing. Teacher-
parent conference upon parents or teachers request. Weekly teaching
plan with will be provided to parents each Friday for the following week.
Structured setting and nurturing teacher will be provided. Buddy system.

Annual goal: Child will increase vocabulary.
Short-term objective (s):
Child will identify new words by filling the
missing word/s in a sentence with a 90% level of accuracy.
Annual goal: Child will increase decoding skills.
Short-term objective (s):
Child will recognize beginning consonant
sound/s of all letters by naming the letter that makes the beginning
sound/s represented in a picture card with 90% level of accuracy.
Child will use context clues and letter sounds to decode words b looking
at unfamiliar words in sentences and using the sound of the beginning
letter to think of a word that makes sense in the sentence with a 90%
level of accuracy.
Child will recognize contractions by identifying words made by putting two
words together with a 90% level of accuracy.
Child will learn short vowels by identifying words that have short vowel
sound in the middle of the word with a 90% level of accuracy.
Child will learn long vowels by identifying words that have a long vowel
sound in the middle with a 90% level of accuracy.
Annual goal: Child will improve
reading comprehension.

Child will predict outcome in a story by
looking at a picture and underlining the sentence that tells what will
happen next with a 90% level of accuracy.
Child will understand punctuation by writing sentences and sing the

Child will tell time to the hour and half-hour by

Annual goal: Child will understand

Child will be able to describe why people are different
(different races, skin color, ethnic background, rituals, people with disabilities).
Child will know about and will be able to show appropriate behavior to
